Starting on May 19, 2025 Granite Construction began a $3.5M project to repave all public roads within RTG and Mercurio. This 4.5-mile effort resulted in major improvements to our very old and badly damaged roads.
This work was the result of many years RTG effort to convince Monterey County to fund and initiate the project. Especially, RTG resident Mike Raydo is to be thanked for helping bring this benefit to everyone.
Some highlights are:
- 10,800 tons of new asphalt paying material were used.
- All cul-de-sacs completely replaced including underlying base material. This is due to 50 years of damage from heavy garbage truck turn around. The new surface should be much more durable than the original.
- Asphalt aggregate (rock) used was a more expensive ¾ inch size vs a standard half inch. This will give better traction, especially for wet surfaces.
- The road center was not ground down in most areas but was left intact. This will result in a thicker roadway with twice the usable life as the original.
- Road striping will now be 6 inches wide vs 4 inches before. The material is a new extra thick and enhanced reflective paint that is both more visible and durable.
The new asphalt surface will be much hotter from the sun than before. Residents should check the pavement temperature before walking pets during sunny & warm days
